Braniewo is located on the plain of Warmia, on the Pasłęka river, near the mouth of the river Pasłęka to the Vistula Lagoon. Braniewo is the oldest city in Warmia, was founded in about 1240 years the place where the former Prussian castle Brusebergue. From 1250 to 1340 years the city was the seat of the bishops Warmia. From the fifteenth century in developed goldsmithing, during the Swedish wars the town was repeatedly plundered, in 1772 the town was annexed by East Prussia. By the end of the eighteenth century there functioned only commercial port in Warmia. In 1852 opened the first in Prussia functioning railway lines in the section Braniewo – Kwidzyn. In 1854 the synagogue was built, which functioned until 1938. After World War II the city was destroyed 85% and looted by the Red Army. also changed the name of the town of Braunsberg on Braniewo. Braniewo was the most devastated village of Warmia, the old town never rebuilt.

Currently stationed in Braniewo Border Guard, 9 Armoured Cavalry Brigade, functioning a botanical garden and horse farm. Beside the River Pasłęka built a modern marina sailing, hence runs in the summer water taxi to New Pasłęka and Tolkmicko. Being in Braniewo you have to see the Basilica of St. Catherine, the former bishop's castle tower(only one surviving fragment of the castle), residue city fortifications, the railway station, the shrine of St. Cross.
