The fortress was located between the arms of the Vistula and Szkarpawa. Probably the first permanent strengthening arose shortly before the second half of 1626. In July 1626 Head of Gdansk was occupied by the Swedes and significantly expanded. Was cast strong crew, allowing to control trade in Gdansk Vistula. From passing ships Vistula to Gdansk and rafts of wood were levied and the goods needed Swedes were stopped and confiscated. Fortification back under the suzerainty of Gdańsk after   truce in Sztumska Wies  (12 September 1635), and was re-manned by a crew separated from the military garrison town. In the years 1655 - 1659 the fortress was the site of many battles between the forces of the Gdańsk and Swedish, Swedes finally left her December 22, 1659.

Was planned extension of the fortifications, but finally decided to strip them out ę in the second half of the seventeenth century, because their maintenance costs exceed the possibilities of Gdansk. Besides, it was feared that if again be captured by the enemy, can again become a place of lock runoff Vistula. Remnants of the fortress was demolished finally the occasion to carry out   Piercing the Vistula   the late nineteenth century (1890-1895); part of the site of the former fortress was occupied by the infrastructure ditch.

Current   Gdansk Head   is the name of built sluice   on Szkarpawa river. Sluice is a picturesque and still acting hydraulic engineering monument. It was built with crosscut Vistula river in 1895. The name inherited from the ancient fortress "Danzig Head". The main function of the slucie is cut off from the mainstream of the Vistula river Szkarpawa to prevent flooding in Żuławy.
